Social connection at work
Discover how employers can promote social connection and why it is important for overall employee health and wellbeing.
The impact of work on social connection
Modern ways of working are making social connection at work more important than ever. Virtual teams and flexible working, whether full-time or occasional, mean fewer face-to-face interactions and a greater reliance on technology. In addition, people are changing jobs more frequently than ever before and part-time work is more common.
Social disconnection and loneliness can develop in the workplace in several ways. Existing feelings of loneliness may be carried into the workplace, while certain job features can trigger or worsen disconnection. The impact of work itself, such as stress, long hours, or a toxic culture, can also spill over into our personal lives and lead to further isolation.
