What employers can do

Employers have an important role in creating conditions that make it easier for employees to stay safe and healthy during extreme heat.

Actions that support both equity and protection include:

Provide guidance on staying hydrated and keeping cool

Share clear advice with staff about drinking water regularly and using cooling methods like fans or damp cloths.

Try to keep cool by closing curtains or blinds during the day and opening windows in the evening when it’s cooler outside.

Encourage staff to avoid the hottest parts of the day when possible

Suggest adjusting schedules so that outdoor or strenuous tasks are done in the cooler morning or evening hours.

Allow flexible working hours or extra breaks during heatwaves

Give staff the option to start earlier, finish later, or take additional breaks to rest and rehydrate.

Ensure workplaces are well-ventilated or cooled

Use fans, air conditioning, or open windows where safe to keep indoor temperatures at a comfortable level.

Make sure staff can easily reach drinking water, cooling equipment and shaded or cool spaces during the day.

Make reasonable adjustments for disabled employees or those with health conditions

Identify any extra support needed, such as rest areas, modified duties, or assistance moving around safely.

Raise awareness of heat-related risks and share safety advice

Regularly remind staff about the signs of heat stress and the steps they can take to protect themselves.

Train managers to recognise signs of heat stress

Help supervisors understand how to spot symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or confusion and take prompt action.

Encourage staff to report if they feel unwell or need support

Promote a culture where employees feel comfortable speaking up if they are struggling with the heat.
