Understanding anxiety

Workplace anxiety refers to persistent feelings of worry, tension, or fear related to work. It may be caused by workload pressures, unclear expectations, job insecurity, performance concerns, workplace relationships, psychologically unsafe environments or organisational change.

Anxiety can impact performance, attendance, communication and overall wellbeing. With the right awareness and support, organisations can significantly reduce its impact.

However, many employees experience significant anxiety without having a formal diagnosis.

Anxiety does not always present as visible stress. It may appear through changes in behaviour, emotions, or physical health.

Behavioural signs may include:

  • Avoiding meetings or presentations
  • Increased sickness absence
  • Withdrawing from colleagues
  • Overworking, perfectionism or reduced participation

Emotional signs may include:

  • Irritability or low confidence
  • Heightened sensitivity to feedback
  • Seeking excessive reassurance

Physical signs may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches or stomach problems
  • Restlessness or difficulty concentrating
