Understanding depression

Depression is a low mood that can last a long time or keep returning, affecting everyday life.

There are many signs and symptoms of depression. Everyone’s experience will be different.

There are some common signs of depression:

  • Feeling down, upset or tearful
  • Finding no pleasure in life or things you usually enjoy
  • Hopeless and despairing
  • Feeling tired all the time

It is very common to experience depression and anxiety together.

Causes of depression

There’s no single cause of depression.

Sometimes there is a trigger for depression. Life-changing events, such as bereavement or a very stressful event can lead to depression.

Different causes can often combine to trigger depression. Work-related stress and mental health problems often go together and the symptoms can be very similar.
