Learn how employers can use Carers Week to raise awareness of caring, support employees who are unpaid carers and share information and resources about caring.

The value of supporting Carers Week at work

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.

It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

As an employer, supporting employees who are unpaid carers can help employees remain in work alongside their caring responsibilities.

Get your workplace involved in Carers Week

Here are some things you can consider doing in your workplace during Carers Week.

Organise an event

Fundraising can be a fun activity in the workplace. From coffee mornings, to sponsored walks or a book sale, there are lots of ways to take part.

Activities like this can also be good for employee morale and wellbeing.

The Carers Week website has resources you can download.

Share information and resources

Use internal communication channels to share trusted advice, information and resources that can support employees with caring responsibilities.

Useful resources include the Carers Wales wellbeing hub and the Carers Week website.

Set up a carers network

Carers Week an opportunity to establish or support a “Carer’s Network” or “Carer Champions,” which are shown to help employees feel supported.

If you have health and wellbeing lead, ask them to talk about caring and encourage employees with caring responsibilities to access support that’s available to them.

Supporting carers throughout the year

Supporting employees with caring responsibilities throughout the year can help create a workplace where your employees feel supported and empowered to look after their health.

Here are some things you can do throughout the year:

Encourage open conversations

Create a workplace where talking about caring for people of all ages is encouraged and supported.

Promote ways for employees to talk about caring, such as joining a Carers Network, if you have one.
