Employer responsibilities

Employers must ensure that manual handling risks are assessed and managed appropriately, and that employees receive suitable information, instruction, training and supervision.

Under health and safety law, employers must assess and manage manual handling risks.

When carrying out a risk assessment, employers should consider:

  • The task
  • The load
  • The working environment
  • Individual needs and abilities
  • Available equipment and support

Employers should also recognise that employees may have different physical capabilities and support needs. Risk assessments should take account of individual circumstances where relevant, including health conditions, disabilities, pregnancy and previous musculoskeletal injuries.
