Spotting signs of addiction at work

Some people can have an addiction but still work well. Others may struggle with their emotions, health, money or relationships because of their addiction.

Signs that someone might be dealing with addiction at work include:

Attendance problems

Taking a lot of time off without a clear reason, arriving late or leaving early often.

Work performance

Making more mistakes, missing deadlines, struggling to focus or getting less done.

Changes in behaviour

Mood swings, irritability, anger, secrecy or avoiding colleagues.

Appearance changes

Looking untidy, poor hygiene or noticeable weight changes.

Physical signs

Bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, shaking hands or unexplained injuries.

Frequent bathroom breaks

Going to the toilet often, possibly to use substances.

Money troubles

Asking for loans, requesting early pay or spending money in unusual ways.

Social withdrawal

Avoiding work events and keeping away from colleagues.

While one of these behaviours alone may not signal a problem, a combination of them could suggest that someone is struggling and may need support.
