Why addiction can occur

Addiction develops when a person continues a behaviour despite its harmful effects on themselves or others. They may feel unable to stop, even if they want to.

There are many reasons why addiction can happen, including:

Family history

If a family member has struggled with addiction, a person may be more likely to develop one.

Personal circumstances

Stress, sadness, trauma, or mental health challenges can make addiction more likely.

Environmental influences

If something is easy to access, such as mobile gambling, people may do it more often.

Peer pressure

Social influence can play a significant role in developing unhealthy habits.

Some people with addiction also find it harder to control their emotions or think about long-term consequences. They may focus on the short-term rewards instead of the risks.
