Spotting signs of alcohol use at work

Some employees may drink alcohol but still meet their responsibilities. Others may struggle with performance, relationships or attendance because of their drinking.

Signs that someone might be struggling with alcohol use at work include:

Attendance problems

Frequent absences, lateness, or leaving work early.

Work performance

Missed deadlines, mistakes, or reduced concentration.

Behavioural changes

Mood swings, irritability, secrecy, or social withdrawal

Appearance

Untidy look, poor hygiene, or bloodshot eyes.

Physical signs

Slurred speech, shaking hands, or smelling of alcohol.

Frequent breaks

Taking long or unexplained breaks during work hours.

Money concerns

Asking for salary advances or struggling financially.

While one of these signs alone may not indicate risky alcohol use, a combination of them could suggest that an employee needs support.
