What employers can do

Effective communication starts at the top. Employers play a key role in shaping an open and inclusive workplace where employees feel heard, valued and informed.

Below are key actions to enhance communication:

Make communication clear, consistent and inclusive
  • Encourage open conversations through regular team meetings, one-to-ones and forums help employees feel involved
  • Set clear expectations to ensure employees understand company goals, updates and their roles
  • Use different ways to share information – emails, meetings, newsletters and digital tools to help reach everyone
  • Keep messages simple, accessible and free from jargon
Create a culture of feedback and engagement
  • Provide feedback channels like surveys and open discussions to hear employee opinions
  • Support employee groups and trade unions by giving employees structured ways to voice concerns and work together on solutions
  • Appoint Wellbeing Champions to promote workplace wellbeing and share key messages
  • Practice active listening – managers should respond to feedback and lead by example in communication
Using technology to stay connected
  • Use digital tools – platforms like Microsoft Teams or Zoom help remote and hybrid teams communicate effectively
  • Host virtual Q&A sessions, discussion boards and track engagement to ensure effective communication
Recognise and reward strong communication
  • Acknowledge employees who contribute to open communication through recognition or incentives
  • Celebrate good communication practices by sharing success stories to inspire others
Track and improve communication
  • Monitor participation in meetings, surveys and engagement activities to spot trends and opportunities
  • Regularly review employee feedback to adjust strategies and improve communication
