What employers can do

To comply with UK equality laws and create a fairer workplace, here are some ideas for your workplace:

Build a more diverse workforce

As an employer, ensure everyone has a fair chance at job opportunities:

  • Review job adverts to make sure they are welcoming to all people, no matter their background or particular characteristics
  • Post job openings in new places to reach more diverse candidates
  • Track the diversity of applicants and change your hiring methods if needed
  • Offer flexible working options like part-time or remote work to support parents and carers
  • Make sure your workplace is inclusive by having things like gender-neutral bathrooms for everyone, for example
Make your workplace more inclusive

Create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected by:

  • Using staff surveys and feedback to improve fairness and update policies
  • Regularly reviewing pay, promotions and adjust to ensure fairness
  • Training managers to offer support and adjustments when needed, like extra time for tasks
  • Joining inclusivity programmes and support equality pledges for causes like age or menopause for example
  • Providing opportunities for under-represented groups through networks, mentoring and development
  • Ensuring work events are inclusive by offering food that meets different religious and cultural needs
Prevent discrimination at work

Help make your workplace safer, fairer, and more productive by:

  •  Regularly updating policies to promote fairness and equality for all
  • Creating policies that support specific needs, such as menopause or parental leave
  • Offering EDI training to all employees, including about the Social Model of Disability
  • Taking a strong stance against discrimination, harassment, and bullying and ensuring everyone knows how to report issues
  • Training managers to apply reasonable adjustments fairly
  • Following health and safety policies and conducting risk assessments when needed
