What employers can do

Employers have an important role in creating conditions that make it easier for employees to stay safe and healthy during flooding.

Actions that support both equity and protection include:

Provide clear information on flood safety and emergency procedures

Make sure staff know what to do before, during and after a flood, including evacuation routes and safe meeting points.

Be careful when cleaning up — flood water may contain sewage or chemicals.

Develop an inclusive flood response plan

Consider the specific needs of disabled employees, including mobility support, accessible transport, or medical equipment.

Encourage staff to prepare personally

Share guidance on keeping emergency supplies like medication, warm clothing and important documents in a waterproof bag.

Plan for safe travel

Avoid walking or driving through flood water, as it can be deeper or faster than it looks.

Encourage staff not to take unnecessary journeys during adverse weather.

Allow flexible working arrangements

Support staff who may be affected by flooding at home or who face travel disruption.

Ensure workplaces are prepared

Protect essential equipment, keep first aid kits accessible and store critical items above flood levels.

Provide support during and after flooding

Check in with affected employees, offer emotional and practical assistance and provide access to occupational health or counselling if needed.

Raise awareness of flood risks and community alerts

Encourage staff to sign up for flood warnings from local authorities or Natural Resources Wales.

Train managers to respond safely and support others

Ensure supervisors understand emergency procedures and can help staff with different needs during a flood.

Encourage staff to report concerns or difficulties

Promote a culture where employees feel comfortable sharing their needs before, during and after emergencies.
