Understanding menopause and its symptoms

Menopause is a natural ageing process experienced by women as oestrogen levels decline. It usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 but may also occur outside of this age range.

Some women may notice symptoms in their 20s or 30s during perimenopause.  This is the phase when menopausal symptoms appear, but periods haven’t stopped yet. These symptoms can last for several years.

Menopause can impact trans men, non-binary people and some trans women too. So, it’s important to have inclusive workplace practices to support everyone.

Not all women’s experiences are the same. It is important to offer support that meets each person’s unique needs.

Common symptoms of menopause – such as hot flushes, fatigue, sleep disturbances, joint pain and mental fog – can significantly affect productivity, attendance and wellbeing at work.

Studies show that menopause can lead to:

  • Lower confidence
  • Time management issues
  • Memory problems
  • Decreased productivity
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety
  • Low self-esteem
