What employers can do

As employers, here are some strategies you can adopt to help support menopausal employees:

Create a supportive workplace culture

Normalising conversations about menopause is important for all employees. This includes women going through or approaching menopause, younger women and male employees.

Lead by creating an inclusive and open environment. Encourage discussions about menopause and make sure employees feel supported.

The British Standards Institution (BSI) has created a guide, Menstruation, Menstrual Health and Menopause in the Workplace,  giving employers clear advice for supporting menopause in the workplace.

BSI has also created The Little Book of Menstruation, Menstrual Health and Menopause, offering easy  tips for  building a supportive work environment.

Put in place robust policies

Develop or update workplace policies to cover menopause-related issues. This includes absence management, flexible working and reasonable adjustments.

Business in the Community (BITC) has a Menopause in the Workplace Toolkit. It’s designed for HR, wellbeing and occupational health practitioners.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) offers webinars, practical employment law resources and a guide on managing menopause in the workplace.

Offer training to all staff

Provide comprehensive training to every employee, including specialised training for line managers. This will help them feel confident in having supportive conversations, giving the right help and offering necessary changes at work.

Make sure every employee can access information and attend awareness sessions about menopause.

To learn more about this natural ageing process, Menopause Matters offers up-to-date information on what happens before, during and after the menopause.

Make workplace adjustments

Make practical changes, such as improving ventilation, access to drinking water and creating flexible work patterns. These changes can make your workplace more comfortable

The Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM) provides guidance on menopause and the workplace. It gives practical tips to improve workplace environments.

Start an awareness campaign

Raise awareness with health campaigns. This can help reduce stigma and encourage open conversations about menopause. Find out more about Menopause Awareness Month.
