What is nature connectedness?

Nature connectedness is a way of describing how close we feel to the natural world. It’s about more than just spending time outside – it’s about feeling like we are part of nature. When people feel connected to nature, they often experience more positive emotions, feel calmer and have a stronger sense of wellbeing.

When workplaces support nature connectedness, it can make a big difference to how employees feel. A workplace that encourages time in nature can help staff stay healthier, happier, and more motivated in their jobs.

Spending just two hours per week in nature is linked to significantly higher health and wellbeing. Recent research has identified five pathways to connecting with nature. These involve:

  • Using our senses
  • Reflecting on how nature makes us feel
  • Noticing nature’s beauty
  • Exploring the meaning nature provide
  • Feeling compassion for nature

A nature connected organisation has impacts beyond the organisations itself. It encourages a way of thinking that values how people and nature depend on each other. It also helps more people understand how being close to nature can make life better.
