What employers can do

Employers have an important role in creating conditions that make it easier for employees to access screening and vaccination services.

Actions that support both equity and uptake include:

Provide time and flexibility for health appointments

Allow time off without pressure so employees can attend screening or vaccination appointments.

Visit the UNISON website for information about medical screening leave.

Share clear, trusted health information

Use resources from Public Health Wales and the NHS to raise awareness via team briefings, posters, newsletters or digital channels.

Ensure materials are accessible and available in multiple formats (e.g. Easy Read, BSL, multilingual).

Lead by example

Encourage leaders and managers to model healthy behaviours by attending screenings or flu clinics and talking openly about it.

Normalising conversations about health can also help to reduce stigma.

Engage in training opportunities

PHW offers free online sessions for people who have an active role in promoting health in the workplace and want to raise awareness of the NHS screening programmes.

Tailor support to your workforce

Understand cultural or practical barriers specific to your workplace. For example:

  • Partner with PHW to arrange onsite flu vaccinations
  • Offer translated or culturally appropriate materials for diverse teams
  • Request screening hard copy resources by emailing [email protected]
  • Download and share digital resources
  • Plan ahead and support a health campaign in your workplace.
Monitor and adapt

Collect anonymous feedback to understand barriers and improve future activity.

Use surveys or suggestion boxes to adapt communications and support strategies.
