Sight loss can create both emotional and practical challenges. With the right support, employees can feel confident, valued and able to work to their full potential.

Small adjustments can make a big difference to wellbeing, performance and team cohesion.

Support may include:

Reasonable adjustments

Putting reasonable adjustments in place can help remove everyday barriers. Avoid assumptions and provide person-centred, flexible support.

Reasonable adjustments can include:

  • Flexible or remote working
  • Providing assistive technology
  • Accessible signage, documents and workspaces
  • Adjusted timeframes where appropriate
Training

Offering training can help managers can employees better understand sight loss and how they can support a colleague with sight loss.

The RNIB has a free Understanding Sight Loss for Employers e-learning course.

Effective communication

Having open, supportive conversations can improve communication and collaboration at work.

Encourage early and safe disclosure of sight loss by fostering a culture of trust and openness. Reassure employees that disclosure will lead to appropriate support, not disadvantage.

Handle conversations with sensitivity and confidentiality, focusing on solutions rather than limitations.
