What employers can do

Under Welsh law, it is illegal to vape in enclosed public spaces and workplaces (since 2017). Employers must enforce these rules.

In settings with a concentration of younger staff, like hospitality, retail or apprenticeships, peer pressure and group behaviours play a big role. Clear policies and positive role models are essential in these environments.

Employers can help discourage vaping by:

Implement a clear vaping policy

Extend smoke-free policies to include e-cigarettes and clearly define where, if anywhere, vaping is permitted.

Educate staff

Provide information about the health risks of vaping and the benefits of quitting.
Dispel myths that vaping is completely harmless.

Support cessation programmes

Promote Help Me Quit, the national smoking cessation service for Wales.

Offer in-house wellness programmes that include nicotine cessation support.

Train managers and supervisors

Ensure they understand the law and know how to enforce vaping restrictions consistently and fairly.

Create a supportive environment

Encourage a healthy workplace culture that discourages all forms of nicotine use.

Celebrate success stories of employees who quit smoking or vaping.
