The impact of a shorter working week

A close up of a person writing notes at a desk.

In April 2024, the Mental Health Foundation joined hundreds of organisations piloting a reduced working week. Over the course of the one-year pilot, full-time hours were reduced from 35 to 32 per week (with part-time hours adjusted proportionately) without any loss of pay.

The results have been encouraging: 69% of staff surveyed reported lower work-related stress, and overall, the research indicates that a 32-hour week can have significant benefits for mental health.
