How job satisfaction impacts wellbeing

On average, we spend a third of our waking lives at work. This means that job satisfaction plays an important role in our health and wellbeing.

The CIPD Good Work Index found most UK workers have positive and fulfilling jobs. Employees who enjoy their work often have supportive line managers, fair pay, opportunities to develop and some control over how they work.

However, some employees report experiencing high pressure, a lack of development and poor wellbeing. A quarter of workers reported that work has a negative effect on their health.

CIPD research also highlights the importance of good people management. Effective management can improve job satisfaction, employee wellbeing and workplace performance.

Questions for workplaces to consider

  • Do employees feel listened to and involved in decisions?
  • Do managers offer regular support and feedback?
  • Are workloads manageable?
  • Do employees have opportunities to learn and develop?
  • Is good work recognised and appreciated?
  • Are flexible working options available where possible?
  • Do employees know where to access health and wellbeing support?

If you answered “no” or “not sure” to any of these questions, there may be ways you can improve job satisfaction in your organisation.
