Common health challenges for older employees

Workers over 50 in Wales face unique health challenges that can impact their ability to stay in the workforce.

Evidence shows that the main causes of sickness absence in this age group include:

Musculoskeletal conditions

Conditions such as back pain, arthritis and joint issues can affect mobility and comfort at work.

Cardiovascular diseases

Including high blood pressure and heart conditions can impact overall stamina and health.

Mental health concerns

Issues like stress, anxiety and depression can be made worse by workplace pressures and personal responsibilities.

Menopause-related symptoms

Symptoms include fatigue, brain fog and sleep disturbances.

Chronic illnesses

Conditions such as diabetes and respiratory diseases that require ongoing management and workplace support.

You can help your employees by promoting workplace wellness initiatives, offering reasonable adjustments and ensuring access to occupational health services.
