What employers can do

Positive messaging from employers is key to making social connection a normal and valued part of the workplace.

It is not enough to expect employees to simply ‘fit in’ or to rely on them finding like-minded colleagues on their own. Here are some steps that you can take:

Build an inclusive culture

Show commitment from senior leaders to make sure every employee feels valued and included no matter their background or role.

Remember that socialising can be challenging for some, such as those who are neurodiverse or have a physical disability, so offer a range of ways for people to connect.

Encourage open communication

Promote regular check-ins and honest conversations to understand how people are feeling.

Include questions about social connection and loneliness in staff surveys.

Support team-building and shared experiences

Plan activities that encourage informal interaction and help teams bond.

Set up staff networks or interest groups to support people at different stages of life or with shared interests.

Connect with the wider community

Consider how your efforts to improve connection at work can align with your role in the community, as part of your Corporate Social Responsibility approach.

Provide support and resources

Offer practical tools to help employees manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Train line managers to hold sensitive conversations with empathy and confidence.
