Remote working
Learn about remote working, its health and wellbeing impacts, employer responsibilities and how to support employees working remotely.
Understanding remote working
Remote working is when employees carry out their role away from a central workplace, such as from home or another suitable location.
It is a form of flexible working, but unlike broader flexible arrangements, remote working focuses specifically on where work is done. Some employees may work remotely full-time, while others combine remote and on-site work as part of a hybrid approach.
Good remote working is about more than location. It ensures employees:
- Feel trusted and supported to work independently
- Stay connected to colleagues and organisational goals
- Have the right tools, environment and guidance to work safely
When delivered well, remote working can support inclusive and healthy workplaces, enabling people to work in ways that suit their needs and circumstances.
