Meeting legal responsibilities

Health and safety

Employers have the same duty of care for employees working remotely as those working on-site. This includes ensuring their health, safety and wellbeing wherever they work.

You should:

  • Assess risks linked to home working
  • Provide appropriate equipment and guidance
  • Ensure employees know how to work safely

Visit the HSE website for guidance on managing home workers’ health and safety.

Flexible working

Remote working is one type of flexible working. Employees have the right to request flexible working from day one of employment, including remote or hybrid arrangements.

Employers must:

  • Consider requests reasonably
  • Respond within the required timeframe
  • Balance employee needs with business requirements

Business Wales offer advice on supporting successful remote working and you can also visit the ACAS website for more information on flexible working requests.
